Michigan State Rep. Shane Hernandez (R-Port Huron) announced Thursday that he attends to run for Michigan’s 10th Congressional District seat that is being vacated by Paul Mitchell (R-MI-10) at the end of his second term in 2021.
“I believe in the American dream because I have lived it. Today I am running for Congress to protect it,” Hernandez said.
In his announcement video, Hernandez touted himself as a conservative who will focus on issues Michiganders care about such as securing better trade deals, securing our borders and protecting the Great Lakes.
Furthermore, he described his time as a state representative as one where he opposed every effort to raise taxes, protect the unborn and take a stand for individual liberties.
If he is to be elected to represent Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, Hernandez says he would stand alongside President Donald Trump and fight against socialism. In his campaign video, he showed pictures of Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar while he described socialist threatening “everything that makes our country great.”
“Their [Socialists] agenda not only in danger of our values, but it jeopardizes our national and economic interests,” the Congressional candidate said.
Hernandez is the first legislature to announce their intention to run for Michigan’s 10th Congressional District. This district is came open in July after surprisingly Mitchell announced his retirement from politics.
“Everything’s about politics. Everything’s about an election. And at some point of time, that’s not why I came here,” the two-term representative told Politico for his reasoning for not seeking re-election.
Republicans will look to maintain its hold on Michigan’s 10th District as it saw the 8th and 11th Congressional districts turn blue with Elissa Slotkin and Haley Stevens winning those seats.
Michigan’s 10th Congressional District voted for President Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton by 32 percentage points and has had a Republican representative since 2003.
